THE BRIEF
Driving meaningful engagement, not just reach, at the exact moment of launch
With The Traitors S4, the BBC set out to address a structural challenge: younger audiences are not disengaged from television, but they engage on different terms, with fragmented attention, higher expectations, and a growing resistance to traditional advertising.
The campaign was built around three objectives: growing engagement among 18–34s (especially 18–24s) to maximize impact at launch, and proving the value of platform-native creative over adapted broadcast assets.
THE STRATEGY
Behaving like the platform, not interrupting it
The strategy was grounded in one principle: performance would be driven by behaving like the platform, not interrupting it. BeReal was used to deliver a high-impact, launch-day takeover creating a single high-salience moment aligned with TX, supported by a broader paid social ecosystem.
Creative was deliberately platform-native: unfiltered, dual-camera imagery that felt observational rather than promotional, pairing a hooded figure on the front camera with a dimly lit castle corridor on the back camera.
THE OUTCOME
A blueprint for the future of paid social
The campaign delivered exceptional performance, with BeReal emerging as the standout channel by exceeding the 0.50% CTR benchmark with a 0.71% CTR (+42%) and a 4.19% Unique CTR, while also outpacing planned delivery with 656,000 impressions versus 500,000 planned (+31%) and 101,000 reach versus 85,000 planned (+19%). The approach has since been rolled out across multiple BBC titles, including Glow Up and Celebrity Traitors, proving both its relevance and its scalability.
