Child Safety on BeReal

You must be 13 to use BeReal

Anyone entering a date of birth under 13 is stopped at signup and cannot create an account.

We know a declared birthday is a filter rather than proof, so we keep looking after signup. Our moderation teams identify accounts that appear to belong to children under 13, including from what users write in their own profiles, and we remove them.

Anyone can report an account they believe belongs to a child under 13. We suspend the account straight away. Getting it back requires an identity document proving the person is old enough.

No advertising to children, and nothing to buy

We do not serve targeted advertising to anyone under 18. Advertising profiling is switched off for minors.

BeReal has no in-app purchases, no virtual currency, no loot boxes and no premium tiers. There is nothing inside the app for a child to spend money on, and no mechanic designed to encourage them to try.

What we do not allow

Our Community Guidelines apply to every account. We prohibit:

  • Sexual content involving minors, in any form

  • Grooming, and any attempt to sexualise a conversation with a child

  • Nudity and sexual content

  • Bullying and harassment

  • Content promoting suicide, self-harm or eating disorders

  • Violent, graphic or dangerous content

  • Impersonation

How we enforce it

Every image is checked while it is published. Automated classifiers scan all content at upload and flag anything likely to break our rules.

People review the decisions. Flagged content and user reports go to trained human moderators who work around the clock. Reports involving young users are especially prioritised in a separate queue.

Reporting is built into the app. Anyone can report a post, profile, comment, or conversation from where they see it. Reports are anonymous to the person being reported.

Action is permanent. When we remove content it stays removed, everywhere BeReal operates. When we ban an account, the ban is permanent.

Child sexual abuse material: zero tolerance

Where we find child sexual abuse material or evidence that a child is being sexually exploited, we remove it, permanently ban the account, and report it to the authorities immediately.

Reporting a concern

You can report a post, profile, conversation or message from inside the app at any time. You do not need a BeReal account to raise a child safety concern with us. Contact us at the address listed at the bottom of this page and we will act on it. If you believe a child is in immediate danger, contact the police first.

Accountable to regulators

BeReal SAS is established in France, so our lead regulator under the EU Digital Services Act is ARCOM, the French audiovisual and digital regulator. Our obligations under the Digital Services Act cover users across the European Union, but we apply similar protections globally.

We respond to lawful requests from police and child protection bodies, and authorities can reach us urgently where a child is at risk.

For parents and carers

If your child uses BeReal, this is what applies to their account:

  • They must be at least 13. If they are younger, tell us and we will suspend the account.

  • Their account is private, and they have no public profile that a stranger can find.

  • Nobody can find their account without already knowing their phone number or username, and your child has to accept.

  • They can block anyone instantly, and that person is never told.

  • They can report any post, profile or message from inside the app.

  • No advertising is targeted at them, and there is nothing in the app to buy.

  • The app is one moment a day. There is no endless feed to get lost in.
